4 Features to Look for in a Quality Wood Chipper

For landowners, spring cleaning means more than giving the kitchen a once-over with disinfecting wipes. Once the snow has melted, it’s time to head out to your acreage and clear any timber that may have fallen over the winter or newly revealed undergrowth.

Wood Chipper PTO

Depending on the size of your property, a wood chipper can prove extremely valuable. Not only does it save you time, but you’ll also end up with a usable byproduct in the form of wood chips that you can use on flower beds, walking paths, and elsewhere.

If you’re shopping for a tool to make your acreage management more efficient, start your search by reviewing this list of four essential features to look for in a new wood chipper.

PTO Drive

Compared to gas-powered or electric chippers, the advantages of a wood chipper for a tractor are numerous. With a PTO wood chipper, you get a more powerful tool to help you get more done. Plus, you can take it wherever your tractor can go, meaning you can use it in areas where it might be challenging to transport other chippers.

If you decide on a PTO chipper, be sure to check the specifications and determine whether the model you’re interested in is compatible with your tractor. Depending on each model’s size and capability, PTO wood chippers have specific power requirements. For example, some are designed for tractors with 35-100+ HP, while others should be used with tractors ranging from 20-50 HP.

Appropriate Branch Capacity

Capacity depends largely on wood chipper PTO requirements. Suppose you don’t need to chip branches larger than 4” in diameter. In that case, a chipper that uses 10-30 HP may be the best option for you. But for branches up to 8” in diameter, the chipper you need will use considerably greater horsepower.

You should also have an idea of the size of your chipper’s infeed opening before you decide it’s right for a particular task. If you need to chip branches with several limbs, make sure your PTO chipper’s infeed opening is large enough to handle them.

Reversible Chipper Blades

Don’t settle for a chipper that uses inadequate blades. For example, if the chipper you’re looking at uses blades made from high-quality, hardened steel, you’re probably on the right track. You can often get the right blades from the same place you go for reliable sawmill parts.

Ideally, you’ll find a chipper with reversible blades, so you can use two cutting edges to make the most out of each blade. Depending on the flywheel housing design, it’s easier to change blades on some chippers than others, so keep this in mind when deciding which model is suitable for you.

Some of the best-valued chippers on the market have a clamshell design, allowing you to open the upper flywheel housing by undoing just one bolt. This makes for more straightforward, quicker maintenance.

Discharge Chute with 360-Degree Swivel

If you’ve used a snowblower or been around someone else while they were using one, you may have found yourself on the wrong end of the discharge chute at one point. With snow, it’s not the end of the world, but it pays to have more control over the direction of your chute when you’re running a wood chipper.

Ensure the model you’re considering has a discharge chute capable of rotating 360 degrees. This will make it easier to ensure those chips end up where you want them, especially if you’re trying to deposit them into a trailer or truck bed.
